700 Photographers at Sydney Rally

The Arts Freedom Rally in Sydney was a great success with around 700 photographers turning up. Ken Duncan made an excellent speech followed by Christian Fletcher, Peter Walton, Earl Bridger, Leo Meier and yours truly.

I have posted a full report on the Arts Freedom Australia website

Sydney Protest Rally

Up to 1000 photographers are expected at Campbell's Cove in Sydney on Sunday making it possibly the biggest gathering of photographers ever in this country. Please turn up if you can spare an hour or so on Sunday - and it will be a lot of fun too.

Full details will be posted on the AFA website

Please turn up at 10.00am, Ken Duncan and I will be making a couple of short speeches at 10.30 and then we will be doing a group photo of the whole group. After that feel free to shoot as many pictures of the Opera Huse and Harbour Bridge as you like and we have some really good prizes for the best photo taken on the day.

We finish at about 12.00pm and will head to The Orient Hotel in The Rocks for a well earned beer.

Lumix LX5 Press Launch

Terry Lane from The Age tries out the LX5. Shot on an LX5 @400ISO

Lumix announced a bunch of new cameras yesterday, including a 3D video camera for under $2000. What I was most interested to see was the new LX5. The LX3 was generally regarded as a very fine compact camera and one of a very few that shot raw and was capable for reproduction quality images. The LX5 keeps those features and adds some more.

Advanced DSLR Video Workshop

Pieter de Vries with a fully equipped Canon 5D MarkII
Pieter de Vries ACS with a fully MovieTube equipped Canon 5D MarkII

There is enormous interest in the video making abilities of the various new DSLRs from Nikon, Canon and Panasonic. I have been shooting videos for web delivery for about 12 months now and have learned a huge amount about the whole complex realm of video - something that is a lot harder than it first appears.

Pieter de Vries ACS and I have teamed up to offer a workshop for those who have recognised the need to incorporate video into their businesses; Pieter brings decades of experience as a documentary cameraman working with high end video and film cameras and I offer the perspective of 28 years as a stills photographer who has recognised and developed the potential of HD video for my business. Read on for more details...

The Lost City

It's hard to imagine there is a city of over 1 million people down there. You can just about make out the spire on what I assume is 1 Eagle Street.

More on Cataloguing.

I have written a detailed explanation of my cataloguing strategy for the Digital Photography School website:

Image Cataloging Techniques at DPS

Judging by the number of comments and Facebook 'likes' it has been quite well received.

Bucket Creating Software

bucketeer

I archive my images to off-site DVDs as well as maintaining an on-line, mirrored archive. So that the two match I use the bucket method of archiving but fitting images into 4.5GB groups (for single sided DVDs) is a tedious process. I shot about 70GB of images in the sub-antarctic last year and so that would mean making about 16 DVD-sized image sets by hand. To automate this process I have created a small PC-only application to take the tedium out of this task.

You can see how it works here...

Kimberley Video

I finally got around to editing together a small selection of the 4.5 hours of video I shot up in the Kimberley last month. Here's the latest cut.
